Lower School Learning

As the parent of a young child, you’re looking for more than just strong academics—you want a place where your child is truly seen, supported, and inspired every day. Like many independent schools, we offer small classes and personal attention; however, what truly sets us apart is our exceptional team of teachers. They bring not only skill and experience to the classroom, but the enthusiasm to ignite curiosity, build confidence, and help your child fall in love with learning.

From kindergarten through seventh grade, our teachers find new and creative ways to reach
every child, no matter their strengths or struggles. With small group instruction and personalized
support, we meet students exactly where they are, whether that means challenging a first grader
with advanced math or supporting a fifth grader with the extra encouragement they need to grow
as a reader.

By the time our students leave the Lower School, they’re not only ready for the next step in their
education—they’re excited for it. And along the way, they’ve developed something even more
lasting than academic skills: a strong sense of integrity, character, and the understanding that they
can make a difference in their communities.

What’s Special About Our Lower School Programs?

STEM programs introduce technology in kindergarten and offer hands-on learning in software programming, science, engineering, and design.

Reading and Mathematics Specialists teach evidence-based reading, spelling, and mathematics programs to assist students who need academic assistance with any component of the reading and mathematics processes, from basic phonemic awareness to comprehension, synthesis, and analysis, and multisensory acquisition.

Our SAVVAS “Experience Science” program engages students in exciting, real-world events like
extreme weather events to teach them about science.

The only thing I can say is that my days at AFA are the best days of my life. Farragut made me a better man. I am wishing and waiting to come visit again soon.
